Tonight at Ottawa Public Library / Bibliothèque publique d’Ottawa Board made a historic decision. We set the policy direction to go late fines free!

The Library exists to ensure knowledge and ideas are available to everyone. It is there to make sure everyone, regardless of their income, their situation, or their background can learn and improve.
La Bibliothèque met tout le monde sur le même pied d’égalité afin que chaque citoyen puisse contribuer à leur communauté et jouer un rôle actif au sein de notre communauté et de notre société démocratique.
Research shows that late fees affect disadvantaged or vulnerable communities disproportionately and create a barrier that prevents people who could greatly benefit from using libraries from using them. This is a fact that, for me, says overdue fines run contrary to the overall mission of the Library to serve everyone — inclusively.
L’argent, la richesse ou les revenus ne devraient PAS entrer en jeu lorsqu’on veut ou doit utiliser la bibliothèque publique, que ce soit pour lire, pour apprendre, pour utiliser des ordinateurs ou l’internet, ou pour se connecter à d’autres personnes.
While this policy will be built into our proposed budget that needs to come before council, this is a historic decision that I am incredibly proud of.
