As many of you know, my greatest passion as Chair of the Ottawa Public Library / Bibliothèque publique d’Ottawa Board is intellectual freedom and the freedom to read. In June 2022, I was proud to help usher in and champion our strong and permissive Intellectual Freedom Policy. The ability to access information and interact with material that challenges convention or our worldview, while sometimes difficult, is necessary for the proper functioning of a representative democracy.
The high bar that we have set means that there will be material in the collection that will offend, challenge and upset a great deal of people. And that’s okay. Having ideas like these in the light and exposed to scrutiny pulls them out of the underground and fosters difficult, but healthy discussion.
In a time where we see increased social division and categorization, a proclivity to enjoy the comforts of our own echo chambers, animosity and retreat from a willingness to speak openly and honestly, the freedom to read is more important than ever.
So read something that challenges you. Expose yourself to new and challenging ideas. Who knows, you may change your mind!

Comme beaucoup d’entre vous le savent, ma plus grande passion en tant que président du conseil d’administration de la Bibliothèque publique d’Ottawa / Ottawa Public Library est la liberté intellectuelle et la liberté de lire. En juin 2022, j’ai été fière de contribuer à la mise en place et à la promotion de notre politique de liberté intellectuelle forte et permissive. La capacité d’accéder à l’information et d’interagir avec des documents qui remettent en question les conventions ou notre vision du monde, bien que parfois difficile, est nécessaire au bon fonctionnement d’une démocratie représentative.
La barre haute que nous avons placée signifie que la collection contiendra des documents qui offenseront, remettront en question et contrarieront un grand nombre de personnes. Et ce n’est pas grave. Le fait d’exposer des idées comme celles-ci à la lumière et à un examen minutieux les fait sortir de la clandestinité et favorise un débat difficile, mais sain.
À une époque où nous assistons à une augmentation des divisions sociales et de la catégorisation, à une tendance à apprécier le confort de nos propres chambres d’écho, à l’animosité et au recul de la volonté de parler ouvertement et honnêtement, la liberté de lire est plus importante que jamais.
Lisez donc quelque chose qui vous interpelle. Exposez-vous à des idées nouvelles et stimulantes. Qui sait, vous changerez peut-être d’avis !
