It’s Small Business Week, and there’s no better time to celebrate the people who make our community thrive. The shops, cafés, restaurants, and services that line our streets are the backbone of our local economy, and they’re run by neighbours who pour their heart into everything they do.

Here in Orléans, we’re fortunate to have the Heart of Orléans BIA supporting and connecting so many of these incredible local entrepreneurs. From business networking and community events to beautification projects and economic development, the BIA plays a key role in strengthening our main street and creating a vibrant place to live,…

Continuing my highlights for Small Business Week, I want to shine a light on local photographer Sean Sisk, whose talent and dedication have made him one of Ottawa’s most recognizable creative professionals — and he’s from right here in Orléans East – Cumberland.

Sean discovered his passion for photography at a young age, when his grandmother gave him his first camera. From those early days in the darkroom to capturing major events and portraits for well-known clients, his journey has been nothing short of inspiring.

His work spans everything from commercial and portrait photography to live concerts and band promotions,…

Continuing my visits to small businesses across Ottawa’s East End, I stopped in to visit Stuffed Cookies by Kat, located at 5929 Jeanne D’Arc Blvd S #11.

This local gem has quickly become a favourite for anyone with a sweet tooth. Kat and her team bake their cookies fresh every day, generously stuffing them with all kinds of decadent fillings — and they are absolutely delicious. But what stood out most wasn’t just the treats, it was their passion for their craft and the care they put into every single batch.

We had a wonderful chat about how the…

Annual COVID-19 and influenza (flu) vaccines have begun to roll out across the community in preparation for respiratory illness season. Vaccines are currently being offered to high-risk populations, with availability expanding to the general public on Monday, October 27.

Respiratory illness season typically spans from late fall through early spring. During this time, viruses like COVID-19, flu, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) circulate at the same time in the community. With colder months driving people indoors and into closer contact, conditions make it easier for respiratory viruses to spread, leading to a rise in infections, hospitalizations and increased pressure on…

As we discussed the City’s Climate Change Strategy today, I took a moment to speak about the growing number of families in Cumberland whose wells have run dry.

These are our neighbours and friends. While private wells are technically the responsibility of property owners, access to clean water is a basic human need. If this were a flood or another disaster, we would all step up to help — and this is no different.

I appreciate the efforts to open local facilities for residents to fill water jugs and access showers, but many of those facilities draw from the same aquifers that are already strained. This is a reminder that compassion, coordination, and foresight must guide our response as we head into winter.

We need to make sure no one is left without water in our community.

The Canada Day Orleans team is seeking your help to make Canada Day Orleans 2026 a greater success! 🇨🇦

Thousands of residents come to Petrie Island for the celebration each year. While they have a dedicated and committed group of organizers, they are seeking additional, dynamic members of the community to join their committee to build on what they have.

This opportunity will interest individuals with leadership and team building skills. It will provide them with the chance to display these skills as they expand their network and build community spirit. They also make sure there are lots of opportunities…

Continuing my visits to local businesses in Orléans East – Cumberland, I stopped in at Danerion Cards and Games, located at 250 Centrum Boulevard, Unit 110.

I had a great conversation with the owners and really appreciated learning more about the business, the community it serves, and the challenges that come with running a local shop. Danerion Cards and Games is a gathering place for hobbyists and gamers of all ages, offering everything from trading cards and board games to role-playing supplies and miniature painting sessions.

What really impressed me is that they host programming every night of the week,…

It’s your city, your budget, and we want to hear from you!

The City of Ottawa engages with residents each year to gather ideas and feedback as it drafts the budget for City Council’s consideration. You have many opportunities to provide your input on items reflected in the budget year-round through your Councillor’s office, committee meetings, social media, contacting 3-1-1 and scheduled engagement opportunities during the budget process.

Continuing my highlights of small businesses in Orléans East – Cumberland, I stopped in to visit Yemen Gate, a truly remarkable local restaurant at 2871 St-Joseph Boulevard.

From the moment I walked in, I was met with incredible hospitality that instantly made me feel like family. The aroma of freshly brewed Yemeni tea filled the air, and when the food arrived, I knew I was in for something special. The tandoori lamb and rice were out of this world, tender, flavourful, and beautifully presented.

Yemen Gate isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience. The owners take real pride in sharing…

Kicked off Small Business Week with a visit to Book Market in the Fallingbrook Mall right here in Orléans East–Cumberland.

Book Market is a wonderful example of how local businesses strengthen both our community and our economy. Every book that finds a new home here supports literacy, keeps resources in circulation, and helps build a more sustainable, circular economy.

Supporting local means supporting our neighbours — and few things feel better than finding your next great read while doing just that.

📣 A Proud Orléans Moment — Let’s Help Poppy Reach the Top! 🇨🇦👶

It’s not every day we get to cheer on one of our own in a North America-wide competition and this one comes with a whole lot of heart. ❤️

Baby Poppy is one of the only Canadians still in the running in the Baby2Baby “Baby of the Year” competition and she’s proudly representing Orléans and our CAF community. Her dad, MWO Jake Molnar-Relf, serves with CANSOFCOM, and their family story is a powerful reminder of the resilience and dedication that defines military families.

I’m proud to share that the Governor General’s Foot Guards (GGFG) are presenting four $2,500 awards to outstanding youth whose ability, hard work, and perseverance deserve special recognition.

As a former GGFG member, I know firsthand how much this regiment values professionalism, dedication, and attention to detail. My four years with the Guards shaped who I am today, and I remain deeply grateful for that experience and the lifelong memories it gave me.

These awards celebrate and inspire young people across the Ottawa region who demonstrate excellence, resilience, and a commitment to community and country.

A safer, more consistent Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard North is finally within reach!

After years of resident concerns and advocacy, a plan to harmonize and simplify speed limits along Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard North is moving forward. It will be presented to the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee next week, with a final vote at City Council in November.

If you’ve driven this stretch, you know the challenge: six different speed limits over just a few kilometres, including time-based school zones and abrupt transitions. This patchwork doesn’t just confuse drivers, it creates real safety risks, especially for children, families, and other vulnerable…
