This afternoon, I spent a couple of hours connecting with you at Blair Station, on the train and on a few local routes coming home to Orléans.

I was pleased to see that buses arrived frequently, users were being helped to get to their stop by on-site staff and most of you were able to make your connections without much of a wait.

My team and I will continue to work with you to improve our service and ensure your commute is as easy as possible.

The AVCA Parks and Green Space Committee has launched a competition to honour Canada’s contribution to the Second World War to rename the Heron Corridor Green Space to re-establish the national significance of this 25 acres of land which was part of the greenbelt established in Ottawa as a living memorial to those who fought and died in the Second World War. Please check out the website , enter the contest and share this with your friends and neighbours.

This is a baby step in the right direction. There is much more work to be done on this file, including ensuring accessible cabs are available after dark and and investing in ParaTranspo.

Today, I declared the kickoff of Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week on behalf of the City of Ottawa. This rare disease is terrible and has taken the lives of wonderful people, far too soon.

Glen Knolls Drive is currently closed at Broken Oak Drive due to a broken watermain. Residents in the area may experience interruptions in their water service. Water service is expected to be restored within 12 hours however the duration of the road closure is unknown at this time.

It was my turn to invite a special guest for the singing of O Canada at our Council meeting this morning. With great honour, I invited and introduced a contingent of the Governor General’s Foot Guards Band to my colleagues of the City of Ottawa Council.

Their regimental colours are proudly hung in trust in the atrium here at City Hall.

On a day when many of us turn our thoughts to our First Responders, Police, and Army Veterans, I thought it appropriate to pay tribute to them with this rendition…

Under the watchful eye of its new guardians of Royal Canadian Legion – Orléans 632, our community now includes a Vimy Oak, a direct descendant of acorns collected by a Canadian soldier during the battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917.

Here is its story:
“The battle of Vimy Ridge, in northern France, April 9th to April 12th 1917, is considered to be one of the defining events of our nation. Where Allied troops had struggled and failed, the Canadians overcame great odds and captured the Ridge after four days of fighting at a cost of some 10,600 casualties.

After the battle, Lieutenant Leslie Miller of Scarborough, Ontario serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, gathered a handful of acorns from a partially buried English oak…

When the Confederation Line opens, buses will continue to serve their current routing for 3 weeks. Eastbound routes from downtown (except Route 222) will begin serving Blair Station in the afternoon before continuing to Orléans to give customers the chance to try the train as part of their eastbound trip.

OC Transpo Ambassadors (Red Vests) will be in place at major stations from September 14th to October 25th

This morning, I received an update on the Stage 2 LRT work in progress. As the new Jeanne d’Arc LRT station includes a redesign of the Jeanne d’Arc overpass, I’ve issued the following direction to staff:

Given that a fatal collision occurred on the slip lane and that the redesigned intersection will provide enhanced safety for pedestrians and those accessing transit on the bridge; would staff assess the prioritization of the improvements to the Jeanne d’Arc / 174 Overpass as part of the LRT Stage 2 construction with a view to beginning these improvements in spring 2020.

Ottawa Fire Services firefighters will visit homes throughout the city between September 9 and 16 to ensure that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are present and in working condition.

Visits will take place between 6 and 8 pm on weekdays and between 2 and 4 pm on weekends. Firefighters will be in uniform and residents are not obligated to provide them access to their home. This is a courtesy call only.
